The comic book SNUFF (a 1997 one-shot from Boneyard Press) is an anthology featuring extreme horror stories. Its creators—responsible for the writing and/or art—are M. Wittmer, Brian Viverous, and James Greer. This is consistently noted in comic listings and databases, such as MyComicShop and Whakoom, which describe it as “stories of an extreme nature” by these three individuals. This is one of the books we were afraid to list in the store… this is a hardcore horror book by some very dark creative forces. I mean DARK… disturbing… this book… SNUFF features short stories by Serial Killer Richard “The NightStalker” Ramirez, banned comic book artist Mike Diana & more.

Mike Diana is the underground cartoonist infamous for his self-published zine Boiled Angel (1989–1992), which led to him becoming the only American artist ever convicted and jailed for obscenity solely based on his drawings. In 1994, he was arrested in Florida, spent time in jail, and was convicted on charges related to publishing, distributing, and advertising obscene material. His sentence included probation, a fine, community service, psychiatric evaluation, and even a court order prohibiting him from creating art that minors could access (enforced by unannounced searches). The case drew support from the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund and highlighted First Amendment issues in comics.The inclusion of his work in SNUFF fits perfectly with Boneyard Press’s reputation for pushing boundaries with controversial, “outlaw” horror comics (often featuring real-life serial killer themes, like the Ed Gein and Richard Ramirez stories mentioned in some descriptions of this issue). It’s a rare, hard-to-find book today due to its extreme content.
